Kushimoto, Coastal town in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan

Kushimoto is a coastal town in Wakayama Prefecture located at the southernmost point of Honshu, characterized by a landscape of rolling terrain and an active fishing harbor. The town's geography features dramatic rocky coastlines and creates a natural setting shaped by maritime activities.

The settlement was officially established in 1889 and underwent administrative restructuring in the following years. A merger with a neighboring town in 2005 shaped its current administrative form.

The community's connection to the sea shapes daily life through traditional fishing and the preparation of seafood like sea urchins and spiny lobsters. This maritime heritage is visible in the harbors and local markets where fresh catches are regularly displayed.

The best time to visit is during warmer months when local fishing and harbor activities are most active. Comfortable shoes are practical since the terrain is hilly and exploring the coastline involves walking on uneven paths.

The distinctive Hashigui-Iwa rock formations extend roughly 850 meters into the sea and are protected geological structures. These rocks were shaped by millennia of wave erosion and offer visitors a rare natural spectacle.
