Magome-juku, Post station of the Nakasendō in Nakatsugawa, Japan
Magome-juku is a post station of the Nakasendō located on a hillside, consisting of wooden buildings along stone-paved paths. The structures spread from the base upward to the summit at around 600 meters in elevation.
During the Edo period from 1603 to 1868, this location was an important rest stop for travelers and merchants between Edo and Kyoto. Its role as a post station made this hillside a busy meeting point along the major trade route.
Artisans here continue making silk and textiles using methods passed down through generations. This craft tradition shapes how the place looks and how people work in their daily lives.
The site is reachable by regular bus service from Nakatsugawa Station, with the journey taking around 30 minutes through mountainous terrain. When visiting, expect varied elevation changes, which calls for proper footwear and time to explore comfortably.
From here starts an 8-kilometer walking trail to Tsumago that follows the original Nakasendō route through dense forests. This walk lets visitors experience part of the historic trade route the way old travelers once did.
