Osaka International Airport, International airport in Toyonaka, Japan.
Osaka International Airport sits on land shared by the cities of Toyonaka, Ikeda and Itami, serving as a key transportation hub for the Kansai region. The facility includes two parallel runways and a multi-story terminal building with jet bridges and waiting areas.
The airport opened on January 17, 1939, and initially served only regional flights within Japan. From the 1960s onward, the facility grew into the main international gateway for the region until 1994, when the new offshore Kansai airport took over most international routes.
The terminal building, erected in 1961, became a landmark for the growing aviation industry in the Kansai region and reflects the functional aesthetic of the postwar era. Travelers experience the busy interaction of commuters, business people and families in an environment focused entirely on punctuality and efficiency.
Getting there is straightforward via the Osaka Monorail or buses that connect the terminal directly with many neighborhoods and train stations. Early morning or late evening arrivals should check the operating hours of local transport, as the monorail runs only limited services at night.
Despite its name, the facility now handles only domestic flights, having handed over its international role to the newer coastal airport in 1994. Over 14 million passengers use the terminal every year for connections to nearly all major Japanese cities.
