Nagashima Spa Land, Theme park in Kuwana, Japan
Nagashima Spa Land is a theme park in Kuwana that spreads across extensive grounds offering over 60 attractions, several roller coasters, and a water park for the summer months. The complex sits on an artificial island between river channels and includes thermal baths, hotels, and a large shopping center alongside the rides.
The complex opened in 1966 as a modest amusement park and grew over decades through additions of thermal baths, more rides, and accommodations. During the 1990s large roller coasters were added that turned the grounds into one of Japan's major leisure destinations.
The grounds combine rides with a large onsen district where guests relax in hot springs following Japanese bathing customs. The bathhouses show traditional timber construction and open-air stone pools that attract both locals and travelers.
The complex usually opens around half past nine in the morning and closes in the afternoon or evening depending on the season. Buses run directly from Nagoya Station to the entrance, and the water park operates only during warmer months.
One of the roller coasters holds the record as the longest steel construction of its kind worldwide and reaches a height of over 90 meters (295 feet). The ride lasts several minutes and travels across the entire park grounds.
