Itsukushima, Sacred Shinto shrine complex on Itsukushima Island, Japan

The Itsukushima Shrine extends across the water on wooden pillars, creating an appearance of floating structures during high tide at Hiroshima Bay.

The shrine's initial construction began in 593 during Empress Suiko's reign, with major expansions by Taira no Kiyomori in 1168.

The vermilion-colored shrine buildings maintain strict Shinto architectural traditions, prohibiting births and deaths on the sacred island since 1878.

Visitors can reach the shrine via a ferry from Hiroshima, with admission fees of 300 yen and operating hours from 6:30 to 18:00 during summer months.

The massive torii gate stands in seawater, measuring 16 meters high and allowing boats to pass through its pillars during religious ceremonies.
