Takagi Bonsai Museum, Museum in Edogawa, Tokyo, Japan
The Takagi Bonsai Museum is a museum in Edogawa, Tokyo, displaying bonsai trees in both outdoor gardens and indoor rooms. The trees on display vary in species and age and are arranged in composed settings following traditional Japanese presentation styles.
The museum was founded in 2002 by bonsai master Kunio Kobayashi, who had built a personal collection of rare and old trees over many years. It was conceived from the start as a place where these trees could be seen by a general audience.
The museum displays bonsai in traditional tokonoma alcoves, which in Japan serve as a dedicated space for art objects within a room. Antique Chinese vessels are placed alongside the trees as part of each composed setting.
The museum sits in Edogawa and is most easily reached by taking the JR Sobu Line to Koiwa station and then a local bus. Checking the bus connection in advance is a good idea, as the last stretch is less straightforward than the train ride.
One of the oldest trees in the collection is a pine estimated to be over 1000 years old, passed down through private hands since the Edo period. The museum also takes in international apprentices who work alongside senior masters and learn the techniques directly on the trees.
