3331 Arts Chiyoda, Arts centre in Soto-Kanda, Japan
3331 Arts Chiyoda is an arts centre in the Soto-Kanda district of Tokyo, housed inside a former junior high school building. The space spans several floors and includes exhibition rooms, a ground-floor cafe, and a rooftop garden open to visitors.
The building served as Rensei Junior High School before being converted into an arts space in 2010. The original school layout was kept largely intact, and its rooms and corridors still shape how the place feels today.
The former school hallways and classrooms give the place a recognizable structure that artists now use as studios and shared workspaces. Walking through the corridors, visitors can sense how creative work happens in a setting that still feels like a school.
A good way to visit is to start at the ground floor cafe and then work your way up through the floors. The rooftop garden is worth a stop at the end, as it gives a moment of calm above the neighbourhood streets.
Public exhibitions at the venue ended in 2023, but the artist residency program is still running and the building remains an active workspace. Visitors who come today are stepping into a place that functions more as a working studio environment than a traditional gallery.
