Mejiro

Mejiro is a residential district in Toshima-ku featuring tree-lined streets with a mix of Western-style buildings and traditional Japanese houses. Small shops, cafés, and green courtyards are scattered throughout, creating the neighborhood's distinctive character.

The district grew from agricultural land during the Meiji period and gradually transformed into a residential neighborhood. The establishment of schools and educational institutions marked this shift and shaped the community that exists today.

The neighborhood maintains temples, shrines, and gardens that reflect Japanese traditions and serve as gathering spaces. These places feel woven into the everyday life of residents who pass by them regularly.

The area is well served by public transport, especially through Mejiro Station on the JR East Yamanote Line. Trains depart at regular intervals, making it easy to move around and explore the neighborhood.

The neighborhood takes its name from the Japanese white-eye bird that inhabits local gardens and parks. These small birds are often spotted during certain seasons and inspired the district's poetic designation.
