Teshima Art Museum, Art museum in Tonoshō, Japan

The Teshima Art Museum structure contains two openings in its shell-like concrete design, allowing natural elements to flow through the exhibition space.

The museum opened in 2010 as part of the Benesse Art Site Naoshima project, which transformed multiple islands in the Seto Inland Sea into art destinations.

Inside the museum, water droplets form naturally on the concrete floor throughout the day, creating an ever-changing display that merges art with natural phenomena.

The museum maintains different seasonal schedules, operating from 10:00 to 17:00 between March and September, and 10:30 to 16:00 from October through February.

The building features a 40 by 60 meter space without any interior columns, creating an open environment where light, sound, and wind interact freely.

Hidden artistic gems around the world

Private art museums and galleries of international importance. The selection includes institutions like Benesse Art Site Naoshima in Japan, Dia:Beacon in New York, and Sammlung Boros in Berlin. These locations combine contemporary art with notable architecture and distinct settings.

Industrial architecture: transformation of historic sites, cultural centers, and public spaces

This collection gathers examples of architectural rehabilitation where former industrial sites have been transformed into new spaces for living, culture, and gatherings. These projects illustrate how contemporary architecture can give a second life to structures that marked European and North American industrial history, while maintaining their original identity. Included are the Oberhausen Gasometer, a 117-meter gas holder converted into exhibition space, the Van Nelle Factory in Rotterdam, an old coffee and tobacco factory turned cultural venue, and the High Line in New York, a 1930s elevated railway converted into a 2.3-kilometer urban park. The Zeche Zollverein complex in Essen showcases Bauhaus-style industrial architecture from the 1930s, while Strijp-S in Eindhoven, a former Philips production site, now hosts creative and technological studios. These sites demonstrate the possibilities offered by repurposing industrial heritage into accessible public spaces.
