Benesse House, Art museum and hotel in Naoshima, Japan.
Benesse House is an art museum and hotel built on a hilltop overlooking the Seto Inland Sea. Concrete structures are designed to blend with open areas, creating spaces where artwork connects with nature.
The complex was designed by architect Tadao Ando in 1992, combining museum and hotel functions in a single integrated structure. The design later received the prestigious BCS Prize for architectural achievement.
Artworks are distributed throughout multiple spaces, from indoor galleries to coastal areas and woodland paths that visitors naturally explore. The arrangement invites people to encounter art as they move through the buildings and grounds.
Visitors can explore the various art areas at their own pace throughout the day. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended since you will travel on foot between buildings and through woodland paths.
Hotel guests encounter artworks throughout their rooms, corridors, gardens, and shared spaces while staying here. This arrangement creates a continuous experience where daily life and art naturally overlap.
