Okayama Castle

The six-story black fortress features wooden slats coated with black lacquer, standing prominently against the Asahi River in central Okayama.

Ukita Hideie completed the construction in 1597, but lost control after the Battle of Sekigahara, leading to the castle passing to the Kobayakawa and later Ikeda clans.

The castle exhibits samurai armor collections and historical artifacts across multiple floors, representing the military architecture of the Azuchi-Momoyama period.

Visitors can access all six floors through an elevator, with the top level providing views of Korakuen Garden and the surrounding Okayama cityscape.

The Tsukimi Tower, built in 1620, remains the only original structure that survived the World War II bombings that destroyed most of the castle complex.
