Tamagawa Aqueduct, Historic aqueduct in Tokyo, Japan
The Tamagawa Aqueduct stretches 43 kilometers from Hamura to Yotsuya, connecting different neighborhoods through a complex water distribution system in Tokyo.
Construction of the aqueduct began in April 1653 under the Tokugawa shogunate, completing the entire structure within eighteen months to address water supply needs.
The Seiemon brothers, originally peasants, received the surname Tamagawa as recognition for their engineering achievement in building this water infrastructure.
The water channel maintains a continuous flow across its length using only a 92-meter elevation difference, demonstrating precise engineering calculations.
The aqueduct gained additional historical significance when writer Osamu Dazai and Tomie Yamazaki chose its waters for their final moments in 1948.
