Taiji, Coastal town in Higashimuro District, Japan.
Located on a forked peninsula near the southern tip of the Kii Peninsula, Taiji extends between Moriura Bay and Taiji Bay, covering 255 square kilometers.
Established as a municipality through the merger of several hamlets in 1889, Taiji received official town status on April 1, 1925.
The town maintains strong maritime traditions dating to the 17th century, when local fishermen developed specialized net techniques and handheld harpoons for fishing operations.
Taiji contains 1567 households with a population of 2960 residents, resulting in a density of 510 persons per square kilometer as recorded in August 2021.
The town experienced a maritime tragedy in 1878 when approximately one hundred fishermen perished after their boats were pulled out to sea during an expedition.
