Kantorisaki Lighthouse, Navigation lighthouse in Taiji, Japan
Kantorisaki Lighthouse is a white octagonal tower standing on a rocky headland along the southern coast of Wakayama Prefecture. The structure rises from the coastal cliffs and serves as a navigation guide for maritime traffic passing through these waters.
An earlier lighthouse structure was built at this location in 1922, but an earthquake destroyed it shortly after. The current reinforced concrete tower was completed in 1923 and became operational within a couple of years.
The lighthouse represents the modernization of Japan's maritime infrastructure following the Anglo-Japanese Treaty of Amity and Commerce of 1858.
The lighthouse sits on a windswept coastal area, so wear sturdy footwear and bring weather-appropriate clothing. There is minimal shelter or shade, so plan your visit timing based on the season and time of day.
During Japan's rapid modernization in the late 1800s and early 1900s, the country invested heavily in lighthouse construction along its coasts. This structure represents that era of maritime development and the coastal infrastructure changes that transformed regional shipping.
