Amida-ji, Buddhist temple in Nachikatsuura, Japan
Amida-ji is a Buddhist temple in Nachikatsuura centered around a main hall housing a 4.8-meter tall Amida Buddha statue. Several connected buildings are arranged across the mountainous site, forming a unified temple complex.
The temple was founded in 1187 as a branch of Todaiji Temple under imperial authorization. Its establishment came during a period of rebuilding and recovery.
The temple serves as a living center for Pure Land Buddhist practice, where visitors encounter daily chanting and prayer rituals. People come here to honor family members who have passed away through shared spiritual practice.
The temple grounds are open during daytime hours and accessible by footpath across sloped terrain. Wear appropriate footwear since walking routes cross uneven mountain ground.
The temple houses a precious treasure dating to 1197, among the oldest of its kind in the country. This container weighs about 820 kilograms and holds a crystal five-tiered tower containing Buddha relics brought from China.
