Kesen district, Administrative district in southeastern Iwate Prefecture, Japan
Kesen District encompasses a territory of 334.84 square kilometers, containing the town of Sumita with a population of 5,228 residents.
The district gained official recognition on November 26, 1878, following the administrative reorganization of territories after the Meiji Restoration in Japan.
The district preserves a distinct linguistic heritage through the Kesen dialect, which incorporates elements from both Japanese and Ainu languages.
Sumita town, the sole municipality within Kesen District, maintains extensive mountain forests covering 90 percent of its total area.
The town hall of Sumita incorporates local materials and craftsmanship, featuring lumber sourced directly from the municipal forests.
