Chiba Family Magariya, Traditional farmhouse in Tono, Japan

The residence features an L-shaped design spread across 2,645 square meters and includes storage houses, workshops, a main dwelling, and a shrine.

Built in the early 19th century during the transition between Edo and Meiji periods, the construction of this farmhouse required ten years of local labor.

The building incorporates tatami rooms with sliding screens and a doma connecting area that served as both kitchen and passage to horse stables.

The property currently undergoes renovations and will reopen to visitors in 2025, allowing exploration of traditional Japanese rural architecture.

The structure combines living quarters with horse stables under one roof, following the Nanbu Magariya style specific to the Tono region.
