Esashi-Fujiwara Heritage Park, Historical theme park in Ōshū, Japan.
Esashi-Fujiwara Heritage Park is a historical theme park in Ōshū with over one hundred timber buildings recreating medieval Japan. The grounds spread across landscaped gardens with ponds and pathways that lead through different districts of homes, temples and marketplaces.
The site was built in the early 1990s as a filming location for a television series about the Fujiwara family who controlled this region during the Heian era. Since then it has been used for many more productions and continuously expanded.
The original name connects Esashi, the old name for this area, with the Fujiwara family who ruled here for centuries. Visitors today can see how people in old Japan lived and worked inside reconstructed houses and workshops.
Visitors should plan at least two hours to explore the different areas and wear comfortable shoes as many paths run over gravel. The site sits outside the city center and is easiest to reach by car.
Film crews still use the sets regularly for historical productions, so visitors may occasionally watch filming in progress. The Kyarano-gosho, a large noble residence with connected corridors, shows the typical building style of wealthy families from that era.
