Gokuraku-ji

Gokuraku-ji stands at the base of Mount Kunimi and houses a main statue of Amida Nyorai within its Shingon Buddhist temple grounds. The site features multiple building foundations scattered across the mountain slopes, revealed during archaeological excavations conducted between 1963 and 1968.

The temple was founded in 857 during the reign of Emperor Montoku and formed a large complex across the mountain slopes. This founding period marked the start of a long-standing religious site in the region.

The temple preserves two original Bishamon statues from its founding period, connecting present worship to centuries of Buddhist practice. Visitors can sense this link to ancient faith traditions in the daily life of the site.

The temple sits on a mountain slope, so visitors should expect uneven paths and inclines. Comfortable footwear is recommended for exploring the grounds and navigating the different levels of the site.

Excavations on the grounds in the 1930s uncovered artifacts from the 10th and 11th centuries. These findings show the site was a major center of Buddhist activity before it was later abandoned.
