Museum of Contemporary Japanese Poetry, Tanka and Haiku, Literary museum in Kitakami, Japan
The Museum of Contemporary Japanese Poetry is a cultural institution in Kitakami that focuses on modern Japanese poetry, tanka, and haiku. The collections include handwritten manuscripts, literary magazines, reviews, and other written materials displayed in galleries within Shiikanomori Park.
The institution was founded in May 1990 and became the first of its kind in Japan dedicated to collecting and preserving materials about modern Japanese poetry. This creation marked an important moment in recognizing contemporary literary traditions in the country.
The museum displays works by Inoue Yasushi and houses the former home of haiku poet Seison Yamaguchi, where visitors can see personal belongings and handwritten notes from their daily lives. These spaces offer insight into how these important poets lived and created their work.
The building offers wheelchair access and provides about 20 parking spaces on the grounds. The park surrounding the facility has walking paths and is pleasant for exploring the area at your own pace.
Each year a new thematic exhibition opens that explores different aspects of Japanese poetry. These rotating displays with illuminated wall installations and kaleidoscope effects offer fresh perspectives on the art form with every visit.
