Machinaka-Rikuzen-Takata Station, Railway station in Rikuzentakata, Japan
Machinaka-Rikuzen-Takata Station is an above-ground railway station in Rikuzentakata, a coastal city in Iwate Prefecture, Japan. The station stood in the city center and was connected to the BRT line operated by Sanriku Railway.
The station opened in April 2017 as a replacement for the earlier Rikuzen-Takata Station, which was destroyed by the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. It was part of a broader effort to restore rail connections to the region after the disaster.
The station sits at the center of a city rebuilt from scratch after the 2011 tsunami, and the surrounding streets reflect that effort to start fresh. The whole neighborhood feels new, because it largely is.
The station is located in the city center of Rikuzentakata and can be reached on foot from the surrounding area. Since it closed in 2018, visitors should check current transport options before heading there.
The station was in service for less than a year before closing in 2018, making it one of the shortest-lived stations in Japanese railway history. It was shut down when the Sanriku Railway line was converted back to regular train operation.
