Iwate Tsunami Memorial Museum, Tsunami museum in Takatamatsubara Memorial Park, Japan
The Iwate Tsunami Memorial Museum features four distinct zones with 150 exhibits documenting the effects of the 2011 catastrophe on coastal communities.
The museum opened in September 2019 to preserve knowledge about the Great East Japan Earthquake that caused severe destruction in Rikuzentakata.
The exhibition includes testimonies from local residents, photographs, and artifacts that document the community response to the natural disaster.
Located at Kesencho, Dotekage 180 in Rikuzentakata, the museum welcomes visitors from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM with last admission at 4:30 PM.
The facility contains preserved elements from the former Michi-no-eki station and displays the Miracle Pine, the single tree that remained standing after the tsunami.
