角星, Sake brewery in Kesennuma, Japan
Kakuboshi is a sake brewery in Kesennuma that makes traditional sake using craft methods. It uses pure water from melted snow collected in the Kamanomae area, and offers different sake series like Mizutoriki and Kametururu in its direct sales store.
The brewery started in 1906 as the Saitoya merchant house and moved to its current location in 1908. It was registered as a tangible cultural property in 2003, showing its long importance to local tradition.
The brewery's name comes from a morning star reflected in a measuring cup during a sake offering at Murone Shrine. This story ties the place to traditional Shinto practices and gives the sake meaning beyond being just a drink.
The direct sales store is open on weekdays from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM, letting visitors buy sake products right there. It helps to walk around the grounds and look at any displays to learn more about how the sake is made.
After the 2011 earthquake, the brewery bought the old Hakusan Elementary School and turned it into the Hakusan Manufacturing Plant. This reuse shows how the brewery rebuilt itself after disaster and kept growing its business.
