Mount Murone

Mount Murone is a peak in the Kitakami Mountains in Iwate Prefecture that rises to about 900 meters. Forested slopes surround the mountain, and an astronomical observatory stands at the summit for visitors to explore.

The mountain held importance for people in the region for generations due to its prominence near Ichinoseki. A shrine at its base reflects the religious significance this place carried in local history.

The summit features the Kirara Astronomical Observatory, equipped with a 50-centimeter reflector telescope for scientific observation and educational programs.

Several hiking trails start from Ichinoseki and lead up the mountain, with many clearly marked and well-maintained. Plan your visit on a clear day to enjoy the best views from the summit.

During the summer season, the slopes become covered in red azalea flowers that are visible from far below. Thousands of these blooms appear at once, creating a rare natural display that draws visitors.
