Imabari Castle, Japanese castle in Imabari, Japan
Imabari Castle is a fortification in Imabari on the coast of the Seto Inland Sea in Ehime Prefecture. The six-story main tower was reconstructed in the 20th century and now houses several exhibition spaces and collections of historical objects.
Todo Takatora built the site between 1602 and 1607 as a military base at the start of the Edo period. The current reconstruction dates to the mid-20th century following the complete loss of the original buildings.
The name refers to the direct contact with the sea, which is still visible today in the way water fills the protective moats. Visitors experience the site as a museum complex offering insight into the warrior class during the Edo period.
The top floor of the tower offers views across the coastline and toward the Shimanami Kaido Bridge. The grounds sit within a public park and can be reached on foot from the city center.
The moats connect directly to the Seto Inland Sea through sluices, allowing the exchange of seawater. This connection creates a habitat where marine creatures live alongside freshwater fish.
