Lake Onnetō, Landslide-dammed lake in Akan National Park, Japan

Lake Onnetō is a landslide-dammed body of water in eastern Hokkaidō located within Akan National Park, surrounded by dense forests and mountain terrain. The water sits enclosed by mountain ridges that rise around its shores, creating an isolated setting.

The lake formed when Mount Meakan-dake erupted and blocked the flow of the Rawan River, creating a natural damming effect. This volcanic event shaped the water body that exists there today.

The name Onnetō comes from Ainu language, combining 'onne' meaning ancient and 'to' meaning lake, reflecting the indigenous roots of Hokkaidō. The area remains a place where Ainu heritage is woven into the landscape and local names.

The site is accessible via maintained walking paths and observation points, available from mid-April through mid-December when conditions are most suitable. Plan your visit during these months for the easiest access.

The water surface displays different color tones depending on weather conditions and viewing angle, earning it the nickname Goshiki Numa, which means lake of five colors. These color shifts happen due to light reflection and mineral content in the water.
