Balabansai Formation

Balabansai Formation, Geological formation in Tien Shan Mountains, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.

The Balabansai Formation is a geological layer in the Tien Shan Mountains spanning across Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. It consists of alternating bands of sandstone, siltstone, and claystone that build up significant thickness across its extent.

This formation developed during the Middle Jurassic period, around 168 million years ago, through extensive sedimentation in marine environments. The layered deposits record changing sea levels and erosional patterns across this ancient landscape over time.

Scientists from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and other nations conduct research expeditions to study the formation's geological composition and fossil records.

Access to the formation is challenging due to its remote location in mountainous terrain. Visiting typically requires coordination with scientific institutions and local authorities in both countries.

The layers contain fossils of unusual animals such as the sauropod Ferganasaurus verzilini and the salamander Kokartus. These discoveries reveal what creatures lived in this ancient marine environment.
