Sinuiju Special Administrative Region, Administrative region in northwestern North Korea
Sinuiju Special Administrative Region is a designated zone in northwestern North Korea situated along the Yalu River, directly across from the Chinese city of Dandong. The area was designed to function as a special economic zone intended to encourage trade and attract foreign investment.
The region was established in 2002 as part of an effort to create an autonomous zone with its own legal framework. This initiative represented an attempt to introduce economic openness and modernization to the area.
The region maintains traditional North Korean governance practices while incorporating elements intended for international business and trade development.
Access to the region is restricted and requires special permits and official supervision. Visitors should research requirements in advance and follow all local rules closely, as regulations are quite strict.
The original plan included creation of its own passport system, flag, and seal, none of which ever came to fruition. These unrealized symbols reveal how ambitious but ultimately unsuccessful the autonomy plans turned out to be.
