Gunsan

Gunsan is a port city on the south coast of North Jeolla, built around the mouth of the Geum River and a network of islands. The harbor forms the economic core, while residential areas, markets, and industrial zones extend inland from the waterfront.

The settlement started as a fishing village and opened to international trade in 1899, becoming a major rice export port to Japan. This moment transformed it into a regional economic center that shaped its modern development.

The fishing heritage remains visible in daily life, where local markets sell fresh catch and boat repair yards line the waterfront. People here maintain traditions tied to the sea, from seasonal festivals to the language of maritime work.

The city is best explored on foot or by local buses and taxis that connect different neighborhoods. Markets and harbor areas are most active during daytime hours, while evening activities gather in specific entertainment districts.

A massive tidal barrier from the Saemangeum project encircles much of the area, creating an entirely new coastline and wetland ecosystem. This structure ranks among the world's longest and continues to reshape the region's geography and wildlife.
