Tripitaka Koreana

The Tripitaka Koreana contains over 80,000 wooden blocks carved with Buddhist texts, housed in specialized storage buildings within Haeinsa Temple complex.

Initiated in 1236 during the Goryeo Dynasty, craftsmen completed carving the entire collection of Buddhist scriptures by 1251 following Mongol invasions.

The wooden blocks demonstrate Korean craftsmanship through perfectly carved Chinese characters, embodying Buddhist teachings and Korean printing technology.

Visitors can observe the wooden blocks through designated viewing areas at Haeinsa Temple, accessible by public transportation from major South Korean cities.

The storage buildings maintain constant temperature through natural ventilation systems, preventing deterioration of wooden blocks for over eight centuries.
