The park spans 200,160 hectares across the northwestern Tian Shan mountains, featuring landscapes from grassland steppes to snow-covered peaks reaching 4,979 meters.
The protected area originated in 1931 as the Almaty State Reserve in the Malaya Almatinka River valley, before its official establishment as Ile-Alatau National Park in 1996.
Ancient burial mounds from the early Iron Age, Saka burial sites, and medieval fortifications demonstrate the historical presence of various civilizations in this region.
The park management maintains hiking trails, camping areas, and facilities for mountaineering, bird watching, skiing, cycling, horseback riding, and rafting throughout the territory.
The territory contains thirty endangered wildlife species listed in Kazakhstan's Red Book and thirty-seven plant varieties specific to this mountain ecosystem.
