Medeu tract, Mountain tract in Medeu district, Kazakhstan.
Medeu tract is a mountain area in the valleys of two rivers where spruce forests and birch groves cover the slopes at higher elevations. The landscape includes steep terrain with natural water channels that run through the valleys throughout the year.
Construction of a protective dam began in 1964 using explosives to create a barrier that proved its value when a major mudflow was stopped in 1973. This engineering effort made it possible to safeguard the populated areas downstream.
The tract contains a birch grove, Tien Shan spruce forests, and mountain slopes that represent the natural heritage of the Zailiyskiy Alatau Mountains.
The tract can be reached by public transport from the city center, with buses serving multiple entry points along the valley roads. Starting early in the day is advised since paths can get busy when weather is favorable.
The area was designated as a protected reserve in 2006 with special status focused on geological conservation. This designation created a unique protected zone that requires specific management to preserve its natural features.
