Kok Tobe, Nature protection zone and scenic viewpoint in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
Kok Tobe is a nature protection zone and scenic viewpoint located on a mountain that rises 1,130 meters above sea level overlooking Almaty. The summit offers expansive views of the city spread out below, with the Zailiysky Alatau mountains framing the landscape in the distance.
The mountain was originally named Verigina Mountain after a merchant who built his house at its base in earlier times. During the 1960s, the area was transformed into a public park, making it accessible for visitors to enjoy.
The name Kok Tobe means "green hill" in Kazakh, reflecting how locals have long referred to this place. Today, visitors find a bronze Beatles sculpture at the top, with John Lennon seated on a bench beside his bandmates.
The easiest way to reach the summit is by cable car, which takes about six minutes and provides a comfortable ride to the top. Visitors should be prepared for wind at the summit, especially on days with unstable weather conditions.
The mountain is topped with a television tower that stands as the tallest free-standing tubular steel structure in the world. It was specifically engineered to withstand earthquakes up to 8.0 magnitude, reflecting the region's seismic activity.
