Boralday, Archaeological burial site in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

Boralday is an archaeological necropolis containing 47 burial mounds spread across a vast area along the Bolshaya Almatinka River. The largest mound stands 14 meters tall and measures 100 meters across, while numerous smaller earthen structures dot the surrounding landscape.

The site was created by the Saka people, nomadic horsemen who inhabited Central Asia during the early Iron Age. The burials date between the 5th and 3rd centuries BC and represent one of the most significant archaeological records of this culture in the region.

The burial mounds reveal how ancient peoples honored their dead through elaborate earth monuments spread across the landscape. You can observe the importance of horses in their funeral practices, as these animals were buried alongside humans in dedicated areas within the site.

The site is accessible from Almaty city center, managed as an archaeological park where visitors can explore the grounds with guided tours. Wear comfortable shoes and allow adequate time to walk between the mounds, which are spread across the large terrain.

The region's dry climate has preserved human remains, clothing, and artifacts over centuries, giving archaeologists detailed insights into the daily life of these ancient peoples. These exceptional preservation conditions make Boralday an unusually rich source of information for understanding Saka culture.
