Wat Ong Teu Mahawihan

Wat Ong Teu Mahawihan, Buddhist temple in central Vientiane, Laos.

Wat Ong Teu Mahawihan is a Buddhist temple in central Vientiane housing a monumental 5.8-meter bronze Buddha statue within its ordination hall. Four neighboring religious structures surround the main sanctuary, forming a cohesive temple complex.

The temple was founded in the 16th century by King Setthathirat I and later suffered damage during Siamese invasions. It underwent reconstruction in the 19th century and has remained an important spiritual landmark since then.

The temple serves as a major center for Buddhist learning in Laos, where monks study sacred texts and participate in traditional rituals that visitors can observe.

The temple grounds are located in the city center and open daily to visitors for easy access throughout the week. Wear respectful clothing when entering the ordination hall and be mindful of monks engaged in their daily practices.

The architecture blends Indian influences with traditional Lao features such as lotus-shaped columns and multi-tiered protective roofs. This fusion of styles reflects the region's historical trade routes and cultural exchanges.
