Wat Inpeng, Buddhist temple in central Vientiane, Laos.
Wat Inpeng is a Buddhist temple in central Vientiane with a main entrance featuring a grand gate adorned with green Naga snakes, leading to a sim with an ornate facade and golden floral patterns. The complex includes multiple buildings and courtyards arranged around the main sanctuary for worship and meditation.
The temple was originally constructed in the 16th century but suffered destruction during the Siamese invasion of 1827. Following this devastation, the site underwent multiple reconstructions that shaped its current appearance.
The temple complex contains a statue of Phra Mae Thorani, the Earth Goddess, positioned near a small pond, representing Buddhist teachings and local beliefs that visitors can observe today.
The temple is located on Rue Setthathilath near the Mekong River and maintains free admission for visitors. Plan to arrive early in the day or late afternoon when the light is best and the site is less crowded.
A three-story drum tower stands in front of the main hall, housing percussion instruments used during religious ceremonies and celebrations. This structure serves not only as a musical instrument but also as a time signal for the monks and community.
