Hunnas Falls, Waterfall in Matale District, Sri Lanka
Hunnas Falls is a waterfall in Matale District that drops about 48 meters and spans around 12 meters wide. The water originates from the Hunnasgiriya mountain at roughly 1,765 meters elevation and flows through an area with landscaped gardens and agricultural terraces.
The waterfall came into being through the development of the Elkaduwa plantation, which created the cascade system. This change connected the water flow to the Mahaoya Reservoir and shaped the landscape visitors see today.
Local people call this waterfall Hunas Ella, and the surrounding area has long been used for growing spices like cinnamon and cardamom. Farmers in the region maintain these gardens as part of their daily work and livelihood.
Visitors can reach the site using two main routes: a 22-kilometer road from Kandy or a path from Matale, both leading to Elkaduwa village. The best time to visit is during drier months when the paths are easier to walk.
Five different streams merge together in the upper section of the waterfall before the water flows through the grounds of Hunas Falls Hotel into the Sudu Ganga River. This coming together of multiple water sources creates a remarkable natural feature at this location.
