Independence Memorial Hall

Independence Memorial Hall is an architectural structure in Colombo featuring tall columns, arched openings, and stone carvings. The building spreads across a substantial footprint with multiple ceremonial spaces and exhibition areas.

The hall was built in 1953 to honor Sri Lanka's independence from Britain. It marks the location where the country's first parliament convened in 1948.

The hall displays elements of Sinhalese design through its columns and carved details that reflect the nation's heritage. Visitors can observe the craftsmanship in the stonework and decorative features that connect to the independence period.

The site is open regularly for visitors and offers guided tours that cover the independence story. An attached museum displays documents and artifacts from that era in well-organized exhibitions.

The adjoining Independence Square becomes the center of national celebration every February 4, when crowds gather for official ceremonies. This annual event marks the date when the first parliament officially opened in 1948.
