Panduwasnuwara

Panduwasnuwara is an archaeological site with remains of palace buildings, Buddhist monasteries, temples, and stupas surrounded by thick brick walls. The structures spread across a large area and date from the medieval period.

The site was once Parakramapura, a royal capital where a powerful ruler governed from 1153 to 1186. After his reign, invaders destroyed and abandoned the city.

The buildings display traditional stone pillars and moonstone steps that show how people constructed their homes during medieval times. You can observe these details throughout the foundations and entry areas.

A nearby archaeological museum displays statues, metal objects, pottery, and jewelry found during excavations. You can see artifacts that help explain the daily life and crafts of the people who lived here.

A round palace building sits at the center, surrounded by a circular moat. Local stories say it was built to protect a princess from suitors.
