Tomb of Vijaya

The Tomb of Vijaya is a circular structure perched on Medagama Kanda hillock, built from curved bricks with carved Sinhala script. The construction reveals the building methods and materials used for creating monuments during this period.

The monument is linked to King Vijaya, a ruler from the earliest chapter of the island's history. Analysis of remains found inside suggests a time period reaching deep into the region's past.

The monument demonstrates early burial practices of Sri Lankan civilization and reflects the written language of its era. The inscriptions carved into the bricks remain visible today and offer insight into how people communicated in ancient times.

The site is reached by walking forest paths from Kande Medagama Raja Maha Vihara temple, requiring a climb to the hilltop. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and expect steep, uneven terrain.

The bricks themselves bear carved text in an archaic form of the local language, providing researchers with material evidence of early writing systems. Such inscribed bricks are rare, making this location valuable for understanding ancient craftsmanship.
