Weras Ganga Park, Urban recreational park in Bellanwila, Sri Lanka
Weras Ganga Park is an urban green space that lines Weras Lake with stone-tiled pathways, planted garden areas, and food stalls along the waterfront. The design creates distinct zones for walking, jogging, and cycling among cultivated landscaping.
This space was built in 2014 by the Sri Lanka Army and Navy as part of a defense ministry initiative. The original purpose grew from flood control efforts studied and shaped by international cooperation.
The park sits near Bellanwila Rajamaha Viharaya temple, where modern recreation blends with traditional Sri Lankan architecture. Visitors can experience how this space honors both leisure and spiritual heritage.
The park has clear, level pathways that are easy to walk and accessible for most visitors. Shaded rest areas and food options are scattered throughout, making it simple to spend a few hours here.
This park started as a flood management solution, so it serves both recreation and water control functions at the same time. Most visitors do not realize they are walking through an engineered landscape designed to protect the surrounding area.
