Piliyandala Clock Tower

The Piliyandala Clock Tower rises 23.8 meters high with a girth of 4.9 meters, featuring four clock faces and three large chimes that mark each hour.

D. Simon Samarakoon constructed this tower between September 1952 and April 1953 as a memorial to honor his parents, Cornelis Wijewickrema Samarakoon and his wife.

The clock tower functions as a central meeting point for local residents and stands as a primary reference landmark in the Piliyandala community.

The internal mechanism requires weekly winding through a key system that operates three machines, maintaining accurate timekeeping across all four clock faces.

Each clock face spans 1.52 meters in width, with minute hands extending 0.76 meters and hour hands measuring 0.61 meters in length.
