Diyasaru Park, Urban wetland park in Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, Sri Lanka
Diyasaru Park is a wetland park with artificial ponds, canals, and wooden boardwalks that cross through different vegetation zones and water bodies. The design allows visitors to walk close to water and observe the natural surroundings from multiple viewpoints.
The area was originally marshland near the Parliament Complex and was transformed by a land reclamation development corporation into a protected space. It opened to visitors in 2017 as a place where wildlife and people can coexist.
The name Diyasaru comes from Sinhala and means rich in water, reflecting how the park protects local water habitats and their ecosystems. Visitors experience this connection to nature while walking the wooden pathways through the wetland areas.
The park is open daily from morning until evening with several entrances allowing different routes through the space. Wearing sturdy footwear is helpful since the wooden paths can become slippery when wet.
The park is home to over 50 migratory bird species and several fish varieties including three found nowhere else in the world. Endangered fishing cats use the area as a critical habitat for survival.
