Diyatha Uyana, Leisure park in Battaramulla, Sri Lanka
Diyatha Uyana is a park along the Diyawanna Oya riverbank in Battaramulla, Sri Lanka, with lit pathways, open green areas, and a floating restaurant next to the Waters Edge Hotel. The grounds are laid out for walking and sitting, offering views over the water throughout the day.
The park was built on marshy ground and opened in September 2014 through the joint work of the Sri Lanka Army, Navy, and Civil Security Department. The wet terrain required specialized construction methods to make the land usable for the public.
On weekends, the park hosts flower and plant markets where local sellers set up stalls and visitors browse seedlings and potted plants. These markets are a regular part of neighborhood life and draw families as well as gardening enthusiasts.
The park is accessible from the Polduwa junction near the Parliament Complex and has designated parking areas. The walkways can become slippery after rain, so sturdy footwear is a good idea.
The floating restaurant was designed and built by naval engineers, making it a rare case of military expertise applied to leisure. This connection between armed forces and everyday enjoyment reflects how the whole park came to be.
