Nevėžis, Primary river in central Lithuania
The Nevėžis is a river flowing through central Lithuania for about 209 kilometers from Paraisčiai Mire to where it meets the Nemunas River. It winds through farmland and forested areas, with varying widths and depths that change with the seasons.
In medieval times this waterway marked a natural boundary between Samogitia and Aukštaitija, two major Lithuanian regions. Its role as a border shaped settlement patterns and regional identities for centuries.
The city of Panevėžys along these banks owes its name to this waterway, reflecting how deeply settlements here depend on water resources. Locals use the riverbanks for walks and as gathering spaces throughout the year.
The river has varying depths ranging from about 4 to 9 meters, though some sections become shallower during summer. Visitors should note that conditions change with the season and rainfall patterns.
The Krekenava Regional Park along the middle section was established in 1992 to protect European bison in their natural habitat. This protected area is one of the few places where visitors might spot these large animals roaming freely.
