Evangelische Kirche Ragnit, Lutheran church in Neman, Russia
The Evangelische Kirche Ragnit is a three-nave plastered church in Neman, Russia, with a vaulted central section and flat side areas. Surrounding galleries and a pulpit altar from 1775 define its interior layout.
An original church from the 15th century was replaced with a new building in 1517, later damaged by fire in 1757 during the Seven Years' War. Reconstruction followed the needs of the period.
The interior combines Lutheran building traditions with local construction methods, visible in the gallery layout and central altar arrangement. This blend shows how religious buildings adapted to their regional surroundings.
The eastern section of the former building now serves as a Catholic chapel, while the western part held an Orthodox prayer room until 1995. Visitors should expect the space to have housed multiple religious uses over time.
The church tower was added in 1853 to complete the architectural design, but was demolished to its base in 1993 following an accident. This dramatic change marks a clear break from the late 19th century appearance.
