Neris Regional Park, Regional park in Vilnius District Municipality, Lithuania.
Neris Regional Park is a protected area in the Vilnius District, running along the Neris River and covered mostly by dense forest. The park contains several nature reserves with different habitats, and a number of archaeological sites are found within its boundaries.
The park was established in 1992 to protect a landscape that had been shaped by human presence over many centuries. People had lived and worked along the Neris long before that, and the traces they left behind, from earthworks to settlement sites, are still found across the area.
The land along the Neris has been farmed and settled for centuries, and that history is still visible in the old wooden structures, mill ruins, and small chapels scattered across the area. Walking the trails, you get a clear sense of how rural Lithuanian life once looked and how closely it was tied to the river.
The Visitors Centre in the village of Dūkštos is the best starting point for a visit, and the easiest way to get there is by car. The park's areas are far apart from each other, so having your own transport makes it much easier to move between them.
The park is home to one of the largest remaining groups of old oak trees in Lithuania, with some specimens several hundred years old. These trees were already standing long before most of the region's towns and villages took their current form, giving the forest a presence that feels older than anything nearby.
