Besarabija, Historical neighborhood in Šiauliai, Lithuania.
Besarabija is a residential neighborhood in southern Šiauliai that spans from the railway line toward Verduliai village and Gardino street. The area is now characterized by multi-story brick apartment buildings that replaced the original village structures.
The area received its name when plots of land were distributed to military veterans who had fought in conflicts involving the Bessarabia region. Decades later, the neighborhood underwent complete redevelopment between 1982 and 1990 with construction of red brick buildings that transformed the urban landscape.
The name reflects the origins of early settlers who were military veterans from conflicts in the Bessarabia region. Over time, local shops and craft workshops became gathering places where residents met and exchanged goods and services.
The neighborhood is easily accessible via the railway connection and main streets that link to the city center. Getting around is straightforward due to the clear layout of the residential blocks and organized street plan.
After the 1966 Tashkent earthquake, many families relocated from Uzbekistan to this district, creating a distinctive community with shared roots elsewhere. Local residents gave the place the nickname Tashkent, reflecting this unexpected connection to Central Asia.
