Vianden, Medieval municipality in northern Luxembourg

Vianden is a municipality in northern Luxembourg that stretches along the Our river near the German border. Narrow streets wind upward to a fortified castle complex on a hilltop, surrounded by sturdy stone walls.

The settlement received its formal charter in 1308 from Count Philip II, granting rights and privileges to local craftspeople and merchants. This document established the foundation for its growth as a trade center along the river route.

Artisanal traditions continue to shape the local identity, rooted in the work of guilds that once produced leather, textiles, and gold items within these streets. These crafts remain embedded in the community's memory and daily character.

The location is best explored on foot, with paths leading through narrow streets up to the castle. Visitors should allow time for steep sections and wear comfortable shoes for the uneven terrain.

The area hosts an annual nut market in October where local producers display traditional Luxembourg varieties and regional products. This yearly event draws visitors interested in heritage crops and artisanal goods.
