Copper mine of Stolzembourg, Historical copper mine in Stolzembourg, Luxembourg.

The copper mine of Stolzembourg is an underground facility with twelve levels that descends deep beneath the surface. Nine of these levels now sit submerged under water that fills the system of passages at significant depth.

Mining operations began in the 18th century when copper deposits were discovered in the area. Activities continued until 1944, when the operation was permanently closed.

The site holds memories of when mining shaped local livelihoods and defined the rhythm of daily work for generations. The traces visible today tell the story of a craft that sustained communities and left its mark on the land.

Visitors wear safety equipment such as helmets and rubber boots before descending into the underground passages. Tours run on a set schedule and begin from a location in the village.

In 1717, a scientific investigation revealed that local livestock suffered from copper poisoning due to water contamination caused by mining. This was one of the earliest documented cases of environmental damage linked to mining operations.
